DES MOINES, Iowa - Not only does Hot Lotto® have some of the best odds of winning in a lotto game, but it's also at its third highest jackpot in history.
The Hot Lotto jackpot has been steadily climbing over the past several weeks and now Wednesday's estimated jackpot is more than $12.9 million.
The highest Hot Lotto jackpot on record is $19.97 million in Jan. 2007. John Hall of Indianola was the sole recipient of the largest Hot Lotto jackpot prize to date. The second largest prize was $16.69 million in Aug. 2009.
"The current Hot Lotto jackpot has already exceeded the Mega Millions® starting jackpot," said Hot Lotto Chair and Director George Parisot. "The Hot Lotto odds are 1 in 10,939,383, giving players a better chance of winning the Hot Lotto jackpot versus the Powerball® or Mega Millions jackpots."
According to Parisot, the Hot Lotto game was created to make it easier to be a millionaire. Hot Lotto players choose five numbers from a pool of 39 and another number, called the Hot Ball, from a pool of 19. The Hot Lotto jackpot starts at $1 million and grows until someone wins it. Tickets in the game cost $1. Hot Lotto drawings are held at about 9:40 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays, just before the Powerball drawings.
Players can multiply their non-jackpot prizes by three with the Hot Lotto Sizzler option. The cost is $1 per play. Prizes are always tripled with the Hot Lotto Sizzler.
"The Hot Lotto Sizzler® option has been a popular add-on as the jackpot continues to grow," said Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich. "The extra dollar multiplying your non-jackpot winnings by three is a great way to win more money."
In 2010, eight Iowa Lottery winners each claimed a $30,000 prize thanks to the Hot Lotto Sizzler option they added to their tickets.
