Deborah Sly Wins Big Prize in the April 17 Powerball® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Des Moines woman said even though she rarely plays the lottery, she is sure glad she bought a Powerball ticket for the April 17 drawing.
Deborah Sly, 51, won a $10,000 prize in the drawing and said she couldn't believe it.
"I was shaking. I thought, 'Oh my gosh, this can't be true,'" Sly said.
Sly said she bought the ticket on a whim while visiting her son-in-law at work. Sly purchased her winning ticket at Hy-Vee, 4815 Maple Drive in Pleasant Hill.
Sly said as she saw more and more numbers matched on her ticket, she started to get butterflies in her stomach.
"I thought, 'Oh, I should check those numbers.' I got online and thought I had won three dollars because I had the Powerball number," Sly said. "And then I kept looking and looking, called my kids over to the computer to confirm it, and we went right up to Hy-Vee and they confirmed I won $10,000!"
Sly's children were visiting her for dinner when she discovered her win. She said everyone is very excited for her. Sly said her boss at Bethany Life Communities was so excited he gave her time off to claim her prize.
Sly claimed her prize Monday, April 19, at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. She said she's entertaining the ideas of paying bills with some of her winnings, as well as taking a trip somewhere.
"I bet my kids will start playing now," Sly laughed. "They're believers now."
The winning numbers on April 17 were 5-21-22-41-49 and Powerball 15. The Power Play®' multiplier was five. Sly matched four of the first five numbers drawn and the Powerball to win a $10,000 prize. Had she added the Power Play to her ticket, Sly would have multiplied her $10,000 win by five to win a total of $50,000.
Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot) up to five times. The cost is $1 per play. The Power Play number, 2 through 5, is chosen at the beginning of the drawing indicating the amount prizes (except the jackpot) will be multiplied if that number is drawn.
For players who choose the Power Play and match five white balls (regularly a $200,000 prize), the multiplier will always be 5, so those players would win an instant $1 million.
