Cheryll Matznick Wins Top Prize Playing "Crossword" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Lanark, IL woman said she was in such disbelief about her $30,000 "Crossword" win, she headed straight back to the retailer to have it validated.
"I thought I had won $3,000 and kept counting and it came up ten and I didn't believe it. Then I went and had it verified," said Cheryll Matznick as she claimed her prize May 7 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
Matznick, 64, purchased her winning ticket at Mother Hubbard's, 321 N. Division St. in Davenport, but took the ticket to the nearest retailer to have it validated.
"They were all very nice. They all said congratulations. I believe it now," she said.
Matznick said after she had her win confirmed, she couldn't sleep so she called her friend, Mary, to tell her about the big win.
"My friend came with me today to hold my hand," Matznick laughed.
Matznick said Crossword is her favorite scratch game. Her biggest prize prior to this win was $100.
"You don't just scratch and it's over. It takes a while to play," she explained to the lottery staff as to why she enjoyed Crossword.
Matznick, who is a retired health care worker, said she was sure she was wrong when she discovered her win.
"I thought I must have looked wrong. I counted at least twenty or twenty-five times," she laughed.
Matznick said she plans to keep playing. She said she plans to use some of her winnings to pay bills and splurge a little.
