Dennis Hunter Claims Prize On Behalf Of Group From The June 16 Powerball® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - A group of 20 co-workers from the Cedar Rapids area has won a $10,000 Powerball prize.
Dennis Hunter bought the group's tickets the night before the June 16 drawing. He went to bed early that evening and was awakened with some good news.
"I went out Tuesday night after I collected for the lottery and bought the ticket," he said. "My wife woke me up and said she thought that our group had won big money."
Hunter waited until the next morning to share the news with the entire group, who all work in the avionics department at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids. He notified them the same way he always does, but with an added twist.
"I always post the numbers. I make a copy and post them so everybody can see them. And then in red marker, if we win anything, I just write on there we won 'X' amount, you know, whatever it was. Then I put the $10,000 on there and then I kind of put a little flap of paper over, so they would have to lift it up to see what the amount was," Hunter said. "So when they lifted the flap, they all thought I was messing with them."
Hunter claimed the prize on behalf of the group, who have only been playing together for about three months, at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. He purchased the group's winning ticket at Casey's, 150 Kirkwood Ave. in Lisbon.
Hunter said the group plans to keep on playing.
"We're going to try it again!" he said.
The winning numbers on June 16 were: 8-11-18-29-36 and Powerball 6. The Power Play® multiplier was 5. The group matched four of the five white balls and the Powerball to win a $10,000 prize. If they had added the Power Play option, they would have won $50,000.
Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot) up to five times. The cost is $1 per play. The Power Play number, 2 through 5, is chosen at the beginning of the drawing indicating the amount prizes (except the jackpot) will be multiplied if that number is drawn.
Here are the 20 members of the group:
