Pennelope Banderas Wins Top Prize In "Lucky Lines" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Council Bluffs woman never thought she'd be the one to win, but luck was on her side when she won the top prize of $30,000 in the "Lucky Lines" instant-scratch game.
Pennelope Banderas said she'd just picked up her daughter from softball practice when she scratched the winning ticket.
"I scratched it and I didn't think it was a winner, and she was looking at it and she told me, 'Mom, I think it's a winner. I think you have a line.' … and I said, 'That's a $30,000 line, are you sure?' She said, 'Well, you got everything….'" said Banderas. "I just couldn't believe it happened to me, somebody that worked all my life. That's pretty much where I'm at. I'm still kind of in disbelief about it."
Banderas, who is 44 and employed at Tyson, played a little joke on her mother and said a friend had won a lot of money and they needed to know where to redeem the ticket.
"Then I told her I was the friend!" Banderas laughed.
Since she won on a Friday evening, Banderas had to wait the whole weekend before claiming her prize, but she didn't mind.
"That's OK because it gave me time to think," she said.
Banderas claimed her prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs. She bought her winning ticket at Kwik Shop, 1602 Avenue G in Council Bluffs.
After thinking about it, she said she'll likely purchase a newer truck and help her children with some of her winnings. Banderas has two daughters in school and two sons who live out of state.
Banderas said she's played the Lucky Lines game before and she liked it.
"I thought it was a cool game, so that's the game I went looking for. I never won the first time I played, but I thought it was cool and time consuming," she explained.
