DES MOINES, Iowa - After buying a few scratch tickets to pass the time while riding in the car, a Bloomfield woman won the top prize of $30,000 playing the "Lucky Lines" instant-scratch game.

Nannette Everly, 49, said her son was planning to drive while they were on their way to Iowa City, so she bought a few scratch tickets to keep herself busy in the car. He changed his mind, however, and Everly didn't get to her tickets until the next day; when she finally did scratch them, she was in for a big surprise.

"I saw that the smaller grid hadn't won anything. The bigger grid kind of makes me nervous, but I went ahead and checked it and I couldn't believe what I saw," Everly said.

Still in shock, Everly asked her husband, Steve, to double-check the ticket for her.

"I was kind of taken aback. It's just not something that happens to us. I was a little skeptical maybe, but that's about it," said Steve.

Everly hung tight to her ticket over the weekend before claiming her prize Tuesday at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. She said she hadn't told any other family members or friends when claiming her prize because she wanted to make sure it was real first.

Everly chose the Lucky Lines ticket as something new to try.

"I think this one is our favorite now, though," her husband, Steve, said with a laugh.

Everly has not made any definite plans for her winnings yet. She said she wants to take some time to sit down and think about it before making any decisions.

Everly purchased her winning ticket at Gas-N-Mor, 206 Washington St. in Bloomfield.
