Christine Uhlenhopp Wins Top Prize Playing "Bingo Night" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - An Alexander woman's leisurely drive paid off when she won the top prize of $25,000 playing the "Bingo Night" instant-scratch game.
Christine Uhlenhopp, 57, said she felt like taking a drive on her own, so she drove to Dows Junction, 904 Cardinal Ave. in Dows and picked up two Bingo Night tickets and an ice cream cone before heading home.
"I decided, 'I better scratch one of these,' so I scratched it. I got on the bottom and I got a diagonal and I thought, 'Oh this is really cool,'" Uhlenhopp said. "I looked at that and I thought, 'I've got quite a few numbers left here.' When I bought it I really had no idea I'd win so much!"
The very last number on Uhlenhopp's ticket was the one she needed to win the top prize. She said she immediately started jumping up and down and yelling, "Woo hoo!"
"My daughter comes in and I said, 'Look at this ticket!'" Uhlenhopp said. "And she said, 'You got an 'X!' You won twenty-five thousand dollars!'"
Uhlenhopp then woke up her husband, who immediately suggested they take the ticket back to the retailer to have it validated.
"It came out and said, 'You're a winner!' And he looked at me and said, 'I can't cash this,'" Uhlenhopp said. "And I said, 'Did I just win twenty-five thousand dollars?' And he goes, 'Yup.' And I said, 'I love you, I love you!'"
Uhlenhopp said Bingo scratch games are her favorite and joked that she should enter the Bingo Olympics. Besides her daughter and husband, Uhlenhopp has told her son the good news as well.
"We went home and I laid awake until about quarter till seven this morning. I got right on the phone and called the office and asked where I had to go. I love Bingo!" she said.
Uhlenhopp plans to use some of her winnings to pay bills as well as buy herself a piece of jewelry. She claimed her prize Aug. 3 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Mason City.
