Paul Massey Wins Top Prize of $15,000 Playing the "Cash Vault" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Dubuque County man said he was shocked to win the top prize of $15,000 playing the "Cash Vault" scratch game after only trying it a few times.
Paul Massey, 75, said he enjoys playing scratch tickets and just recently started playing the Cash Vault game.
"I started playing this two dollar game and was pretty lucky this other day, so I tried it again today. When I got my ticket I said to somebody, 'Am I looking at that right or wrong?'" Massey said. "He said, 'No, you've got fifteen thousand dollars!'"
Massey, who has retired from John Deere in Dubuque, said he then had the cashier at the convenience store validate his ticket for him.
"I won a couple of years ago, but I never thought I was that lucky of a player," he said.
Massey, who is from Farley, said he's told one of his friends the good news and plans to tell his other friends soon. He said the win comes at a good time.
"I'm getting my house redone," he said.
Massey has major hail damage to the roof and siding of his house from summer storms, so he plans to use his winnings to help with reconstruction.
"We have an older home and it's two stories. This is the second time the roof has been replaced in six years," Massey said.
Massey claimed his prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. He purchased his winning ticket at Casey's, 306 First St. S.W. in Farley.
