Derle Mork Wins $20,000 Prize in the September 4 Powerball Drawing

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Ponca City, OK man was visiting his children in Iowa when he purchased his Powerball ticket for the September 4 drawing and ended up winning a $20,000 prize.

Derle Mork, 51, said he plays Powerball no matter what state he's in and was glad it happened to be Iowa for this drawing.

"We were going to our kids' house to barbeque, and I bought some tickets. We went home and I decided to check my tickets on the computer," Mork said.

Mork said he saw that he had matched the Powerball number first, but then discovered several more of his numbers matched.

"I entered it in and I said, 'Holy cow, I got twenty grand!'" he said.

Mork said the entire family was close by playing video games and heard him celebrating.

"They stopped playing for just a second. I had to recheck the numbers on the computer again and saw the same thing so I said, 'Cool!'" Mork said.

Mork, who owns and operates his own lawn care business, said he's told most of his friends and family the good news, including his dad. He won the prize on a computer generated "easy pick" and added the Power Play® for an extra $1.

"Always buy it every time. That extra dollar means an extra ten grand!" Mork said.

Mork said he plans to use some of his winnings to pay bills.

"We just decided the right thing to do was to pay off some loans. We're almost debt free and this just speeded it up," he said.

Mork claimed his prize Tuesday at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. He purchased his winning ticket at Hy-Vee Gas, 102 Eighth St. S.W. in Altoona.

The winning numbers for the $50.4 million jackpot on Sept. 4 were 11-14-22-33-42 and Powerball 38. The Power Play multiplier was two. Mork matched four of the first five numbers drawn and the Powerball to win a $10,000 prize. Because he added the Power Play to his ticket, Mork multiplied his $10,000 win by two to win a total of $20,000. There was no winner for the Sept. 4 jackpot.
