"Lucky LaLas" Claim $200,000 Prize From Saturday's Powerball® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - After five years of playing together, a group of 17 long-time friends from across Iowa won a $200,000 Powerball prize in Saturday's drawing.
The group, calling themselves the "Lucky LaLas" after the nickname of the person designated to buy tickets, said no one could believe they'd won that big.
Sherry Wagner of Dakota City and Mike Scow of Rutland, claimed the prize on behalf of the group Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Storm Lake.
"She got up and started checking our tickets and she said she checked them 15 times before she really believed that yeah, we did win. Then we heard a rumor that someone in Humboldt won," said Wagner, 62.
Wagner said that Linda "LaLa" Bleich of Rutland is responsible for collecting the group's money and purchasing the tickets. She also got to spread the good news amongst the group over the weekend.
"We did it all Sunday afternoon after we were really, really sure we were the winners," Wagner said. "'You're kidding,' was the first thing everyone said."
Wagner, who works at the post office in Dakota City, said the group only plays Powerball and always buys computer-generated "easy pick" tickets.
Wagner said she's told her family the good news, but doesn't know who else has spread the word. She said all of her family believed her.
"I don't kid about money," she said with a laugh.
Wagner said the group has already agreed to continue playing. She said they like to joke about what they'd do if they won the jackpot someday.
"We were all going to leave the state of Iowa for a little while and hide," she laughed. "We were going to shut our phones off and not visit with anyone for a while until we decided what we were going to do."
Bleich purchased the ticket at Kum & Go, 1212 Eighth Ave. N. in Humboldt.
Other members of the Lucky LaLas are: Larry Johnson, Tracey Ruberg and Edgar Wagner, all from Dakota City; Terri Lyon of Fairfax; Terese Granahan and Mary Thilges of Humboldt; Thomas Johnson, Oelwein; Diane Terwilliger, Ottosen; Larry Brady, Pocahontas; Steven Hurst, Renwick; Bruce Rooney and Paul Skow, both of Rutland; Deborah Skow, Thor; and David Terwilliger, Vincent.
Wagner said that group members like to imagine winning big.
"What keeps us going is dreaming," she said.
The winning numbers in Saturday's $116 million jackpot drawing were 1-18-37-39-44 and Powerball 13. The Power Play multiplier was 4. The group came close to winning it all that night, matching the first five numbers but missing the Powerball to win a $200,000 prize. Had group members added the Power Play®, they would have won an instant $1 million.
Saturday's $116 million Powerball jackpot was won with a ticket purchased in Georgia.
