Harold Crannell Wins $15,000 Top Prize Playing New Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Marshalltown man said he never expected to be the first top prize-winner on the "Triple Diamonds" instant-scratch game when his wife sent him to the store for some bananas.
Harold Crannell, 76, said he took a short trip to a local convenience store to get some bananas for breakfast when the Triple Diamonds ticket caught his eye. It was a new ticket, so he thought he'd try it.
"She said it was new and so I thought I'd buy it. I better go buy a couple more," Crannell joked.
Crannell said he bought two tickets; on the first he won a $29 prize so he decided to try a second one, but never dreamed he'd win that big.
"I went to the truck to scratch it off with a lucky penny," he said. "At first I thought it was fifteen hundred dollars, so I looked again and saw it was fifteen thousand."
Crannell said he immediately took the ticket back into the retailer to have it validated.
"The gal that sold me the ticket couldn't believe it. I couldn't either!" he said.
Crannell, who is retired, went home to tell his wife before coming directly to the lottery's headquarters in Des Moines Friday to claim his prize.
"I think she was more in shock. I put everybody else in shock. I wasn't going to be the only one!" Crannell said with a laugh.
Crannell said he hasn't made any plans for his winnings just yet, but he knows he will continue to play the Triple Diamonds ticket every once in a while.
He purchased his winning ticket at Kwik Star, 2500 S. Center St. in Marshalltown.
