Patricia Agnew Wins the Top Prize Playing "Crossword" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Davenport woman said her mind was filled with wonderful thoughts after she discovered she'd won the top prize of $30,000 playing the lottery's "Crossword" instant-scratch game.
Patricia Agnew, 49, said she was home when she scratched her Crossword ticket. When she uncovered the ten words needed to win the top prize, she couldn't believe it.
"I woke my boyfriend up out of a dead sleep and said, 'I think I just won thirty-thousand dollars!'" Agnew said.
Agnew said she'd asked her boyfriend double-check the ticket, decided just to take the ticket back to the retailer have it validated.
"I said, 'I want you to come down here and check it.' And he came down and I said, 'Never mind, I'm going up to have Hawkeye check it out and make sure,'" she said.
Agnew said it really didn't hit her that she'd won that big until she claimed her prize Tuesday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
"Right now everything's still going through my mind," she said. "Paying bills, getting me a nice place to live."
Agnew said she plans to use some of her winnings to pay bills as well as purchase a home. She said she plans to continue playing Crossword because it is her favorite ticket.
Agnew purchased her winning ticket at Hawkeye Convenience Store, 6807 N.W. Blvd. in Davenport.
