Donald Grant Wins Top Prize of $30,000 Playing "Rings of Cash" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Des Moines County man immediately started sharing the fun of his good fortune after winning a $30,000 lottery prize.
Donald Grant, 46, said he was out with a friend when they both decided to buy some instant-scratch games. He tried the "Rings of Cash" game and ended up winning its top prize of $30,000.
"I took it to Chad's wife and I asked her, 'Is this real?' And she said, 'Shut up!' It was a winner," Grant said.
Grant, who is from Danville, said he was very lucky that night, winning $37 in smaller prizes in addition to his $30,000 prize. Grant said he had his big winning ticket checked at a retail location just to double-check it.
"I was telling them, 'Share the wealth,'" Grant said.
He said he followed his own advice and gave another customer in the store one of his smaller winning tickets after realizing he'd won the big prize. Then he began sharing the good news with his family.
"I told one of my daughters about one o'clock in the morning. I sent her a text and she called me back about two minutes later," he said.
Grant, who owns his own construction business, said he hasn't completely decided what to do with his winnings, but he plans to invest some.
Grant claimed his prize Tuesday at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. He purchased his winning ticket at Casey's, 1028 U.S. Hwy. 34 E. in Middletown.
