Ann O'Brien Claims Big Prize Playing "Lifetime Riches" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Dubuque woman said she has a lucky clerk to thank for her $10,000 prize playing the "Lifetime Riches" instant-scratch game.
Ann O'Brien, 53, said she and her husband stopped into the Hartig Drug store at 1600 University Ave. in Dubuque to grab a bite to eat when she decided to buy the Lifetime Riches ticket.
"[The clerk] said, 'I feel like this is a winning ticket.' And I said, 'Well now I've got it,'" O'Brien joked.
O'Brien sat down with her husband, Gary Gross, to eat lunch and scratch her ticket when she started to realize she'd won a big prize.
"I saw a star and knew I was a winner. And then I looked at it and said to my husband, 'I just won ten thousand dollars,'" O'Brien said.
O'Brien, who is retired, said her husband was in total shock.
"He said, 'Shut up.' And I said, 'I just won ten thousand dollars!'" she said. "And he said, 'You need to be quiet.'"
O'Brien said she walked straight back to the cashier to tell her what she'd won.
"I'm jumping around like a five-year-old. And I went back to the clerk and she said, 'Did it win?' And I said, 'Big time!'" O'Brien said.
O'Brien had to wait over a week to claim her prize Wednesday at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids because she had to have dental surgery the day after her win.
"We just moved here from Chicago five months ago and we love Iowa!" she said.
O'Brien said she's told other family and friends the good news and none of them believe her because she's known as a jokester. She said she plans to use some of her winnings to pay bills as well as purchase new windows for her home.
