Lee County Woman Triple Checks Numbers To Find $10,000 Hot Lotto Prize

Valencia Kassmeyer Claims Prize from Nov. 3 Hot Lotto® Drawing

  Hear Valencia tell her story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Lee County woman said she checked her numbers three different ways before she believed she had won a $10,000 Hot Lotto prize.

Valencia Kassmeyer, 59, said she picked up her Hot Lotto tickets as part of her regular routine and never dreamed she'd match all but one of the numbers to win a $10,000 prize in the Nov. 3 drawing.

"I was really excited yesterday," Kassmeyer said. "I started to check them online and checked them and re-checked them. And then I got out my Hawkeye local newspaper and checked them again. And I was still so shocked I thought, 'I'm just going to go get a print out.'"

Kassmeyer, who is from West Point, drove to a local retailer to have the ticket validated. When the numbers matched up, that's when she believed she'd won. She called her husband to tell him the good news.

"He was really excited. We live on a farm and this year wasn't a good year for farming, so this will help," she said.

Kassmeyer has also told her children and their families. All of them were very happy for her.

Kassmeyer said she won with an "easy pick," but also plays her own numbers sometimes. She said she plans to continue with her same routine of buying Hot Lotto tickets every once in a while.

"Maybe I'm too much of a person of routine," Kassmeyer said with a laugh.

Kassmeyer said she plans to put her winnings into savings until she can decide how to use the money.

Kassmeyer claimed her prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. She purchased her winning ticket at Hy-Vee Gas, 2632 Ave. L in Fort Madison.
