Hear Lois tell her story.
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Linn County woman said she thought she'd only matched one number when she decided to claim her Hot Lotto winnings at a local retailer, but ended up with much more.
Lois Nuebel, 50, said she saw that she'd matched the Hot Ball number from the Nov. 3 Hot Lotto drawing and later found out she'd won a $10,000 prize.
"The lady behind the counter just about passed out. I'm like, 'What? Did the machine not read it? It's like two bucks,'" Nuebel said. "And she said, 'No, it's much more than that!'"
Nuebel, who is from Center Point, said she immediately went out to the car to tell her husband what had happened.
"I said, 'Well you know, they wouldn't give me any money, but they gave me this instead.' And he said, 'You've got to be kidding me!'" Nuebel said.
Nuebel, who is an accountant, and her husband were on their way to see family when they discovered they'd won, but she said they dropped the ticket off somewhere safe before continuing on the trip. She said all of her family is excited for them.
Nuebel said she and her husband plan to use some of her winnings to take a trip for their anniversary.
Nuebel claimed her prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. She purchased her winning ticket at The Corner Store, 4200 Lewis Access Road in Center Point.
The winning numbers in the $10.67 million Hot Lotto jackpot drawing on Nov. 3 were: 1-11-23-34-37 and Hot Ball 13. There was no jackpot winner for that night's drawing.
