Davenport Man Wins $15,000 With Lucky Penny

William Kosgard Wins Top Prize Playing "Triple Diamonds"

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Davenport man said out of the three coins in his pocket, he never thought it would be the penny that would reveal the top prize of $15,000 on his "Triple Diamonds" instant-scratch ticket.

William Kosgard, 74, said he purchased three scratch tickets on his way home from the grocery store and decided to use each of the three coins in his pocket to scratch the different tickets. It just so happened that the last one, a penny, revealed a $15,000 prize.

"I scratched the two quarters and they were no good. And would you believe that penny scratched that fifteen thousand dollar winner?" Kosgard said with a laugh.

Kosgard was home alone when he discovered the win and said he looked the ticket over several times before realizing what he'd won.

"I just couldn't believe it," he said.

Kosgard said the first person he called and told was his brother, who was very excited for him. He's also told one of his children the good news.

Kosgard claimed the prize one day after discovering his win. He claimed his prize Nov. 15 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

"Went to bed about eleven thirty and got up at six. I did find it kind of hard to sleep," Kosgard said.

Kosgard said he plans to use some of his winnings to put a new floor in his kitchen as well as help out family.

He purchased his winning ticket at Hy-Vee, 2351 W. Locust St. in Davenport.
