Richard Dugan Wins the Top Prize of $30,000 Playing "Crossword" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - An Independence man wins top prize on his favorite instant scratch game, "Crossword," and said he was thrilled to win $30,000.
Richard Dugan, 63, said he's been playing Crossword off and on since the ticket debuted and couldn't believe it when he saw the $30,000 prize on his ticket.
"I couldn't believe it. I figured I did a wrong letter or something," Dugan said with a laugh.
Dugan was home with his wife, Linda, when he scratched the winning ticket. He said he had to call her over to make sure he was seeing it right.
"She had to check it over and make sure I didn't make a mistake," he said.
When Dugan claimed his prize Nov. 18 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids, he said he hadn't told any family or friends yet, but was expecting them to be excited.
Dugan said he hadn't decided on plans for his winnings yet. So for now he said he's putting the money into savings until he can decide.
Dugan, who is retired, purchased his winning ticket at Go America, 1906 Third Ave. S.E. in Independence.
