Catherine Johnson Wins Top Prize Playing "Holiday Crossword" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Burlington woman said her dream of owning a home will come true with help from her $50,000 "Holiday Crossword" instant-scratch win.
Catherine Johnson, 50, said of all the holiday tickets available, Holiday Crossword is her favorite.
"I scratched it by myself and thought I won five thousand dollars and then I thought, 'Let me count that again.' And I counted ten and was just like, 'Oh my gosh. I won fifty thousand dollars!'" Johnson said.
Johnson said she ran upstairs to tell her daughter what she'd won because she was still in disbelief. It was late at night, so she waited until the next day to have her ticket validated at a local retailer.
Johnson went back to Burlington Jet Stop South, 901 South St. in Burlington, where she originally purchased it.
"She couldn't believe it either. I know all the girls over there pretty good. I always buy my tickets at that gas station," Johnson said.
Johnson joked that she thinks the whole town of Burlington already knows about her win.
"My phone didn't stop ringing until Sunday night," she said when she claimed her prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
Johnson said this win is definitely going to help her fulfill her dream of buying a house.
"It's already in the process," she said. "I think I may have already found one."
Johnson said she'll definitely continue to play her favorite ticket.
"I didn't believe you could actually win that kind of money, but now I know," she said.
