Cedar County Man Last To Know About His $10,000 Win

Scott Kleinsmith Claims Prize from Dec. 3 Mega Millions® Drawing

Scott Kleinsmith   Hear Scott tell his story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Cedar County man thought he was visiting the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids to claim a $1,000 prize, but ended up with much more.

Scott Kleinsmith, 42, said even though he had his ticket validated at a local retailer, he said he only glanced at the slip and thought he'd won a $1,000 Mega Millions® prize.

"I thought it was only $1,000. I was under that impression until today," Kleinsmith said when he claimed his prize Tuesday. "And then she said, 'You better look at that ticket again.'"

Kleinsmith, who is from Lowden, said he had already told a few family and friends and they were all excited for him. He said his mind was racing when he found out how much he'd won.

"You certainly do have a lot of things racing through there. I do know it's going to be a good Christmas this year," he said.

Kleinsmith, a plumber/electrician for a company in Lowden, said he's planning to use some of his winnings for holiday gifts as well as planning to put a new roof on his house this spring.

He said he'll definitely continue his routine of buying tickets in Iowa's three big jackpot games: Powerball®, Mega Millions and Hot Lotto®. He's already got plans for what he'd do if he won one of those jackpots.

"It's a very physical tough job. I would probably retire for sure," Kleinsmith said. "I'd do a lot more hunting and fishing with my friends and family, too."

Kleinsmith purchased his winning ticket at Cedar Country Store, 2250 Hwy. 30 in Lowden.

The winning numbers in the $62 million Mega Millions drawing on Dec. 3 were: 6-11-12-18-56 and Mega Ball 12. The Megaplier® number that night was 3. Kleinsmith's ticket matched the four white balls and the Mega Ball to win a $10,000 prize. Had he added the Megaplier option to his ticket, Kleinsmith would have multiplied his $10,000 win by three to claim a $30,000 prize.
