DES MOINES, Iowa - A Cedar Rapids man awoke to a $100,000 prize Christmas morning.

John Szewc, 66, was sitting at his kitchen table Christmas morning when he checked his "Iowa's $100,000 Cash Game" numbers in the paper and discovered he'd won the top prize.

"I grabbed my copy of the Cedar Rapids Gazette and opened it up and said, 'Holy crap, there's my numbers!'" Szewc said.

Szewc was the only one awake in the house at the time, but he told his wife the news as soon as she woke up.

"She couldn't believe it," he said.

Szewc said he's told his family and friends about the win and while they were skeptical at first, once he showed them the ticket they were very happy for him.

"I could hardly believe it when I won it, but I've had a couple of days to let it sink in," Szewc said.

Szewc used numbers from his old military ID on his Cash Game ticket. He said he's planning to continue to play the same numbers.

Szewc said he and his wife will take a trip somewhere warm with his winnings.

"Warm weather sounds good around now," he said.

Szewc claimed his prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. He purchased his winning ticket at Hy-Vee, 3235 Oakland Road N.E. in Cedar Rapids.

Players in Iowa's $100,000 Cash Game choose five numbers from a pool of 35. Tickets in the game cost $1 and drawings are held at 6:28 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The odds of winning the game's top prize are 1 in 324,632.

Szewc matched all five numbers in the Dec. 24 $100,000 Cash Game drawing to win his $100,000 prize. The winning numbers that day were: 1-8-9-27-30.
