Clinton Woman Goes Out For Gifts, Comes Home With $30,000 Gift For Herself

Kay Gehl Wins Top Prize Playing "Stocking Stuffer Tripler" Scratch Game

Kay Gehl   Hear Kay tell her story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Clinton woman never dreamed when she and her boyfriend went out to buy gifts that she'd come home with a "Stocking Stuffer Tripler" ticket worth $30,000.

Kay Gehl, 66, said she and her boyfriend, David Kettleson, were out buying their holiday gifts last week when they decided to pick up some scratch tickets as well.

"He said, 'Oh, 30. Oh! 30,000!' And then we both started shaking like a leaf," Gehl said.

Gehl said even though they knew they were right about the amount, she and Kettleson couldn't believe what they'd won.

"I was afraid his pacemaker was going to go off," Gehl said with a laugh. "But my blood pressure was going sky-high too, I could feel it!"

Gehl, who is retired, said she took the ticket to a retailer to have it validated. She said the convenience store clerks were just as excited as she was about the win.

"They said, 'Are you sure it's real?' And I said, 'Yeah, I think!'" Gehl said.

Gehl said she has told all of her family and friends and they were all very excited for her. She said she plans to purchase a new vehicle as well as pay some bills.

Gehl claimed her prize Wednesday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. She purchased her winning ticket at Mac's, 1530 N. Second St. in Clinton.
