Tickets Set To Expire This Month, Players Urged To Double-Check Their Tickets
DES MOINES, Iowa - The deadline is approaching for two unclaimed Powerball tickets that each won a $10,000 prize, and the Iowa Lottery hopes to soon meet the winners.
If it is not claimed, one of the tickets will expire Monday. It was purchased in West Branch. The other ticket is set to expire Feb. 17 and was purchased in Ames.
Numerous other lotto prizes of $10,000 or more also remain unclaimed in Iowa and are set to expire in the next few months if the winners do not come forward. Lottery officials are reminding players to double-check their tickets.
The first ticket winning $10,000 was sold at Casey's, 311 E. Main St. in West Branch, for the Powerball drawing on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010. The winning numbers in the jackpot drawing that night were: 14-22-52-54-59 and Powerball 4. The multiplier that night was 3. The West Branch ticket came close to winning it all, matching four numbers and the Powerball to win a $10,000 prize. Had the winners added the Power Play to their ticket, they would have multiplied that $10,000 prize by three to win a $30,000 prize.
The second ticket winning a $10,000 prize was purchased at Kum & Go, 4506 Lincolnway in Ames, for the Powerball drawing on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010. The winning numbers that night were: 7-8-19-26-36 and Powerball 15. The multiplier that night was 3. Had the winners added the Power Play to their ticket, they would have multiplier the $10,000 prize by three to win a $30,000 prize.
The winner or winners have until the close of business (4 p.m.) on the day of expiration to claim the prize at a lottery office. The Iowa Lottery has offices in Council Bluffs, Storm Lake, Mason City, Des Moines and Cedar Rapids.
In fiscal year 2010, nearly $1.7 million in prizes went unclaimed in Iowa lotto games. Unclaimed prizes in Iowa go into prize pools for future lottery games.
As of Monday afternoon, no one had claimed either of the prizes. Players in Iowa have up to 365 days from the date of the drawing to claim Powerball, Mega Millions® and Hot Lotto® prizes. Players have up to 90 days from the date of the drawing to claim prizes in Iowa's $100,000 Cash Game and the Iowa Lottery's Pick 3 and Pick 4 games. If the expiration date falls on a weekend or holiday when the lottery's offices are closed, the winner has until the close of business on the next business day to turn in the ticket.
