Kim Lopez Claims Prize from Friday's Mega Millions® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Cedar County woman decided to have her Mega Millions® ticket validated while she was at a local retailer and discovered she'd won a $40,000 prize.
Kim Lopez, 45, said it was sort of a fluke that she even purchased the ticket for Friday's drawing.
"My husband is the one that buys the ticket regularly and he said, 'Do you want me to get you one?'" Lopez said. "So I gave him some money and he got me one with the multiplier."
The next day, New Year's Day, Lopez went back to the Casey's where her husband had purchased the tickets and decided to have hers checked while she was there.
"I handed her my ticket and asked her if she could swipe it and see if I won. And I got that, 'Woo hoo! You're a winner!'" she said. "And her eyes got real big and she said, 'You won forty thousand!'"
Lopez, who is a nurse from Durant, said she was in such disbelief she couldn't even get her phone to work right so she could call her husband. When she finally did get a hold of him, he was just as shocked as she was.
"Well at first he didn't believe me and thought I was teasing him, but when I said it twice he believed me. We're pretty tickled. I was expecting five or ten bucks and wound up with forty thousand," Lopez said.
Lopez said she and her husband recently purchased a lot to build a new house on, so she plans to use some of her winnings to pay for that as well as contribute to her two children's college funds.
"I always play the multiplier. If you win and you didn't play the multiplier it just makes you mad, so I always play it," Lopez said.
Lopez claimed her prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. She purchased her winning ticket at Casey's, 504 Fifth St. in Durant.
The winning numbers in the $242 million Mega Millions drawing on Friday were: 10-12-13-35-56 and Mega Ball 9. The Megaplier® number that night was 4. Lopez's ticket matched the four white balls and the Mega Ball to win a $10,000 prize. Because she added the Megaplier option to her ticket, Lopez multiplied her $10,000 win by four to claim a $40,000 prize.
There was no winner in Friday's Mega Millions drawing.
Players can multiply their prizes (except the jackpot) with the Megaplier up to four times. The cost is $1 per play.
