Susan Sterett Claims Basketball Promotion Grand Prize
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Tipton woman has claimed the grand prize in the Iowa Lottery's "Panther Game Day Getaway" promotion.
The Lottery kicked off the promotion at a Dec. 1 basketball game in Cedar Falls with an on-court check presentation for the latest amount raised for the Iowa Veterans Trust Fund.
Nonwinning "Veterans Hot 7's" scratch tickets, which benefit the Iowa Veterans Trust Fund, were accepted as entries online into the Panther Game Day Getaway promotion through noon on Jan. 12.
Susan Sterett's scratch ticket number was drawn Jan. 12 as the top prize winner. Sterett won four tickets to the Jan. 22 N. Iowa vs. Drake men's basketball game, a parking permit, one night hotel stay at the Clarion Inn (formerly the Holiday Inn) on University Ave. in Cedar Falls the evening of Jan. 22 and $100 spending cash. The grand-prize package is worth $505.
"I was very surprised. I was out of town at the time," said Sterett about being notified she was the big winner.
"It was, 'Whoa,' I wasn't expecting it. That's for sure," said Sterett. "It'll be really fun going to a live game again."
Sterett, 45, plans to take her two sons, Riley, 14 and Patrick, 21.
"The 14-year-old doesn't know yet. It's going to be a surprise," Sterett said with a laugh. "The 21-year-old is [excited]."
Sterett, an accountant at HWH Corporation in Moscow, said the fact that she's won still hasn't sunk in yet.
"It's still hard to believe until, I guess, we'll be driving up there and talking about it," said Sterett. "It might sink in a little more."
Winners of first- and second-place prize packages also were drawn.
Shannon Hershey from Brooklyn won the first-place prize of $75 in lottery coupons; Larry McGrane from Waterloo won the second-place prize of $50 in lottery coupons.
