La Porte City Man Plans To Give Part Of $10,000 Win To Charity

William Jungling wins in Jan. 12 Powerball® Drawing

DES MOINES, Iowa - A La Porte City man said he never dreamed he'd walk out of a local convenience store $10,000 richer when he stopped for coffee.

William Jungling, 50, was with his brother when they decided to stop for coffee and to check his Powerball® tickets from the Jan. 12 drawing.

"At first she said I won a thousand and I thought that was pretty cool," Jungling said. "And then she printed it off and it was ten thousand!"

Jungling said when he went back out to the vehicle and told his brother, they were both in disbelief. Since they were only three blocks from the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids, Jungling and his brother headed straight there to claim the prize.

"I tried calling my wife but she didn't answer," Jungling said.

Jungling said no matter what amount he wins, he always tries to contribute some of it to charity, which is what he's planning to do with part of his $10,000 winnings.

"I always said I'll give ten percent. And that's what I do when I win like five bucks or ten bucks," he said.

Jungling said he plans to give a portion of the money to his church along with a donation to Exceptional Persons, Inc. in Waterloo, a non-profit agency supporting individuals with disabilities and families with child care needs. He also plans to purchase a new piece of machinery for his horse ranch.

Jungling purchased his winning ticket at Casey's, 402 W. Fourth St. in Vinton. He claimed his prize Jan. 13.

The winning numbers in the $65.8 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Jan. 12 were 19-21-23-40-48 and Powerball 27. The Power Play® multiplier was 4. Jungling won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Had he added the Power Play to his ticket, Jungling would have multiplied his $10,000 win by four to win a $40,000 prize.

There was no jackpot winner for the Jan. 12 drawing.

Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot) up to five times. The cost is $1 per play. The Power Play number, 2 through 5, is chosen at the beginning of the drawing indicating the amount prizes (except the jackpot) will be multiplied if that number is drawn.

For players who choose the Power Play and match five white balls (regularly a $200,000 prize), the multiplier will always be 5, so those players would win an instant $1 million.
