Clinton County Man Discovers $250,000 Win During Routine Stop

Chad Miller Claims Prize from Jan. 14 Mega Millions® Drawing

DES MOINES, Iowa - When a Clinton County man stopped into his local retailer to pick up his lotto tickets for the week he left with a huge surprise: he'd won a $250,000 prize.

Chad Miller, 36, said he was just making a routine stop at the Preston Country Store at 164 N. Main St. in Preston when the clerk asked him if he'd heard that someone who purchased a ticket at the store won a $250,000 Mega Millions prize.

"She said, 'Somebody has won $250,000 and I know you buy tickets pretty regularly,'" Miller said.

Miller, who lives in nearby Teeds Grove, happened to have his Mega Millions ticket from the Jan. 14 drawing in his truck, so he decided to have it validated while he was at the store. And much to his disbelief, he had the winning numbers.

"She looked at it and she said, 'You're not going to believe this. You have the numbers!'" Miller said. "I still didn't believe her until she ran it through the machine and heard 'Woo hoo! You're a winner!'"

Miller said word around town is pretty much out that he's the big winner.

"My whole family pretty much knows," he said. "They all live in the same area as where they put it up on the big screen: Chad Miller won $250,000 playing Mega Millions!"

Miller said the Preston Country Store where he purchased his ticket spread the good news with a scrolling sign at the location.

"Ever since then I've just been kind of laying low," he said with a laugh.

Miller said he typically plays lotto games and when Mega Millions began sales in Iowa in January 2009, he decided to try the new game.

Miller's ticket matched the first five numbers but missed the Mega Ball in the Jan. 14 drawing to win a $250,000 prize. Had he added the Megaplier® option to the winning play, Miller would have multiplied his prize to $1 million.

"I've been playing for years and I'm glad it finally hit. It was well deserved and I appreciate it," Miller said.

Miller plans to invest some of his winnings and said he will put the rest into savings until he's had some time to decide what to do.

Miller claimed his prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

The winning numbers in the $30 million Mega Millions drawing on Jan. 14 were: 2-15-17-33-35 and Mega Ball 8. The Megaplier number that night was 2.

Players can multiply their prizes (except the jackpot) with the Megaplier up to four times. The cost is $1 per play.
