Kevin Barr Wins Top Prize of $50,000 Playing "The Black Ticket" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Des Moines man said he was in total disbelief when his routine stop after work led to a $50,000 win playing the lottery's "The Black Ticket" instant-scratch game.
Kevin Barr, 30, said he had won $5 playing The Black Ticket about a week ago and decided to cash that in for another ticket. When that ticket led to another $5 win, Barr got one more ticket and ended up with the top prize.
"I was just talking out loud to the lady I see there all the time while I was scratching it off and after I won the $5 I said, 'I should just take this money and leave,'" Barr said. "So the guy opens the register to give me the $5 with that gal standing right there and I said, 'You know what? Give me one more.'"
Barr stayed at the Kum & Go at 3200 S.E. 14th St. in Des Moines where he purchased the ticket to scratch it.
"I started scratching it off and I was just being funny saying, 'Nope. Nope. Nope,' ready to lose, and I scratched off a six, which matched one of my numbers," he said. "So I started scratching off my prize and there was a five and then a zero and a comma. And I said, 'I just won $50,000!'"
Barr said even though he did not get his ticket validated at the store, the cashier handed him a pen immediately and had him sign the ticket, making it his. The next thing Barr did was call his wife, Cassie.
"I stood there shaking while I called Cassie and she kind of snickered like, 'Yeah right.' And I walked in the door when I got home and showed her the ticket and then she looked at it and looked again and I think that was finally when she realized I had really won," Barr said.
Barr has also told his close family and friends and said they're all very excited for him.
He said he's always wondered about the random luck of winning a lottery prize, and now he knows how it feels to win.
"I'm always interested to hear people's stories like I'm telling right now of how they won and now I get to experience it," Barr said. "I think it's just an awesome feeling the amount of disbelief you feel as soon as you scratch that off and realize it."
Barr said The Black Ticket is his new favorite ticket. He decided to try one after seeing the Iowa Lottery's ad for the ticket on television.
"We saw the commercial and we both said, 'That thing looks cool!'" Barr said with a laugh.
Barr, who does heating and cooling work for the Baker Group in Des Moines, said he plans to put his winnings into savings. His wife, Cassie, has recently begun nursing school and they are looking forward to having some money in the bank while she's in school.
"It's going to be nice to have a little egg to sit on while all that happens," Barr said.
Barr claimed his prize Tuesday at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines.
