Gregory Karasek Wins Top Prize Playing "Iowa's $100,000 Cash Game"
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Cedar Rapids man said he couldn't believe it when he picked up his Saturday morning newspaper and saw he'd matched all five numbers in Friday's "Iowa's $100,000 Cash Game" drawing.
Gregory Karasek, 71, said he's been using the same numbers for some time now and has always hoped they'd eventually win him the top prize of $100,000. And his dreams came true.
"At first I thought I had four numbers and then I thought, 'Oh no, I've got them all!'" Karasek said.
Karasek, who is retired, said the Cash Game is one of his favorite lotto games to play and that he'd always read about players who have used the same numbers for some time finally winning big.
"I run those numbers every week," Karasek said. "You read in the paper that if you play them long enough, they'll come up. And by gosh they did!"
Karasek said he chose his numbers at random. His wife was home when he discovered his win and he was elated when he told her the news.
"My wife was over by the coffee pot. I walked over and put my arm around her and said, 'We won!'" Karasek said. "She said, 'No, you're lying!'"
Karasek said he's also told his four children, who didn't believe him at first but were very excited for him. He said he plans to use his winnings to pay bills.
"We'll be debt free. It's a great feeling," Karasek said.
Karasek claimed his prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. He purchased his winning ticket at Hy-Vee, 1843 Johnson Ave. N.W. in Cedar Rapids.
Players in Iowa's $100,000 Cash Game choose five numbers from a pool of 35. Tickets in the game cost $1 and drawings are held at 6:28 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The odds of winning the game's top prize are 1 in 324,632.
Karasek matched all five numbers in Friday's $100,000 Cash Game drawing to win his $100,000 prize. The winning numbers that day were: 2-8-18-21-33.
