DES MOINES, Iowa - A Kossuth County man said after not playing the lottery for several years, he began playing again and ended up winning a $10,000 prize in the April 5 Mega Millions drawing.

David Kunkel, 60, was on a break at work on April 6 when he decided to check his ticket numbers from the night before. He was with a coworker when he discovered his win.

"She was sitting there and I said, 'I think I probably just won some money,'" Kunkel said. "She looked at it and she said, 'Oh you're kidding. You just made this up!'"

Kunkel wasn't sure what his prize was, but his coworker knew how to look it up on the Iowa Lottery's website.

"I said, 'I wonder how much I won,'" Kunkel said. "And she said, 'You just won $10,000! Sign that ticket!'"

Kunkel, who works as a technician for a small telephone company, joked that he was shaking so bad when he signed his ticket, he's not sure it was legible. He said he was especially surprised because it's been a while since he bought a lottery ticket.

"I haven't played for years and about a month ago I just decided to play a few times. So I've been playing off and on for about the last month," Kunkel said. "I'm just not one to do much gambling."

The first person Kunkel called and told about his big win was his brother-in-law. Kunkel said he likes to make jokes, so he had to do some convincing.

"He said, 'You didn't!'" Kunkel said.

Kunkel is from Titonka. He claimed his prize April 6 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Mason City. He purchased his winning ticket at Titonka Food Center, 235 Main St. N. in Titonka.

Kunkel said he's very interested in antique tractors and is planning to use some of his winnings to purchase one.

"I've been thinking about buying one and now I think I'll do that!" he said.

The winning numbers in the $30 million Mega Millions drawing on April 5 were: 1-19-20-31-36 and Mega Ball 9. The Megaplier® number that night was 2. Kunkelís ticket matched the four white balls and the Mega Ball to win a $10,000 prize. Had he added the Megaplier option to his ticket, Kunkel would have multiplied his $10,000 win by two to claim a $20,000 prize.

There was no jackpot winner in the April 5 Mega Millions drawing.

Players can multiply their prizes (except the jackpot) with the Megaplier up to four times. The cost is $1 per play.
