Daniel Starkey Claims Prize from Saturday's Hot Lotto® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Dubuque man was unaware he had won a $30,000 Hot Lotto prize in the April 23 drawing until he had a local retailer validate his ticket.
Daniel Starkey, 51, said he just started playing Hot Lotto a few weeks ago, so this win really came as a shock.
"Sunday we were coming back after Easter and the young man turned around and was like, 'Hey, you're going to have to redeem this yourself,'" Starkey said. "He handed the ticket to my girlfriend and I look at her, we looked at him and said, 'You're kidding!'"
Starkey said when the clerk told him and his girlfriend, Dana, how much they'd won, they couldn't believe it.
"I always buy with the extra play. The next thing you know the kid's like, 'Hey, you won thirty thousand!'" Starkey said.
Starkey matched the five white balls but missed the Hot Ball to win a $10,000 prize. Because he added the Sizzler option to his ticket, Starkey multiplied his $10,000 win by three to win a $30,000 prize.
He said he enjoys playing Powerball® and Mega Millions®, but started playing Hot Lotto as well because of the better odds.
"A gas station attendant told me the odds were better and it has the extra play like Powerball and Mega Millions," Starkey said. "Six bucks got me $30,000!"
Starkey said he's planning to use his winnings to take a trip.
"We haven't had time for a vacation until now," he said. "I always tell my girlfriend, 'Always play the extra play because when we hit it's going to be well worth it!'"
Starkey claimed his prize April 25 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. He purchased his winning ticket at Ron'ís Five Points Mart, 405 Rhomberg Ave. in Dubuque.
The winning numbers in the $8.07 million Hot Lotto jackpot drawing on April 23 were: 14-16-18-29-32 and Hot Ball 3. There was no jackpot winner for that drawing.
Hot Lotto players choose five numbers from a pool of 39 and another number, called the Hot Ball, from a pool of 19. The Hot Lotto jackpot starts at $1 million and grows until someone wins it. Tickets in the game cost $1. Hot Lotto drawings are held at about 9:40 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays, just before the Powerball drawings.
