DES MOINES, Iowa - A Dubuque man was unaware he'd won a $10,000 prize in the April 27 Powerball drawing until he had his ticket validated at a local retailer.

Dennis Gottschalk, 58, said he was so excited when he realized what he'd won, he grabbed four of his coworkers at Jeld-Wen Doors in Dubuque to tell them the news.

"I had the one guy come with me to claim my prize because he knew where to go," Gottschalk said.

Gottschalk said he enjoys playing Powerball and always uses the lottery's easy pick system to buy his tickets.

"I'm definitely going to continue to play," he said.

Gottschalk said he plans to use his winnings to pay bills.

He claimed his prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. Gottschalk purchased his winning ticket at Kwik Stop, 4039 Pennsylvania Ave. in Dubuque.

The winning numbers in the $20 million Powerball jackpot drawing on April 27 were: 4-24-40-44-55 and Powerball 5. The Power Play® multiplier was 2. Gottschalk won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Had he added the Power Play to his ticket, Gottschalk would have multiplied his $10,000 win by two to win a $20,000 prize.

There was no jackpot winner in the April 27 drawing.

Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot) up to five times. The cost is $1 per play. The Power Play number, 2 through 5, is chosen at the beginning of the drawing indicating the amount prizes (except the jackpot) will be multiplied if that number is drawn.

For players who choose the Power Play and match five white balls (regularly a $200,000 prize), the multiplier will always be 5, so those players would win an instant $1 million.
