Frank Burns Wins Top Prize of $50,000 Playing "The Black Ticket" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Red Oak man said he was extremely surprised when he scratched a ticket in the lottery's "The Black Ticket" game and saw he'd won a $50,000 prize.
Frank Burns, 49, said he admits that after scratching one nonwinning ticket, he was only expecting to see a $5 prize when the second one was a winner.
"I went, 'Where here's a $5 winner,'" Burns said. "I scratched it off and it was 50,000! I turned it over, signed it and just started shaking."
Burns happened to scratch his ticket on Friday the 13th, which added to his skepticism. So he decided to claim his prize that day at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs.
"The most I've won on that ticket is $50 prior to today," Burns said.
The first person Burns told was his girlfriend, Tammy.
"Then my sister and my brother," Burns said was a laugh. "[Tammy] said, 'Oh, you're kidding me! You big liar!'"
Burns, who does maintenance at the Red Oak Greenhouse, said he hadn't made any plans for his winnings so far. He plans to put the money into savings while he takes some time to decide.
Burns purchased his winning ticket at Kum & Go, 710 N. Broadway St. in Red Oak.
