Tamara Estlund Wins the Top Prize Playing "Crossword" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Sac County woman was excited when she thought she'd won $3,000 on her "Crossword" instant-scratch ticket, but she was much more excited when she realized she'd actually won the top prize of $30,000.
Tamara Estlund, who is 28 and lives in Odebolt, picked up the winning ticket at the Casey's at 1230 Third Ave. N.W. in Fort Dodge in the morning, but didn't scratch it until later that night.
"I thought it was a $3,000 winner, so I was pretty excited," she said.
Estlund went back to the Casey's where she bought the ticket the next morning and was shocked to find out the actual amount she had won.
"The cashier looked at me and said, 'It's not $3,000, but it's a little bit more,'" said Estlund.
After learning she'd actually won $30,000, she said she got "a really good feeling, I was shaking."
Estlund's brothers had a hard time believing that she had won at first.
"They were like, 'Get outta here,'" she said. Then she told them, "No, I'm dead serious!"
Estlund said the money will definitely come in handy for her and her family.
"Putting it towards our house, we lost our house due to a tornado and fire," she said.
Estlund claimed her prize June 6 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Storm Lake.
