Deneise Yarrington Wins First Top Prize Playing "Diamond Mine" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Runnells woman won the first top prize of $30,000 playing the lottery's "Diamond Mine" instant-scratch game.
Deneise Yarrington claimed her prize June 2 at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Des Moines.
Yarrington was in the parking lot at work scratching the ticket when she discovered she was a big winner.
"There are six numbers you have to get and I got five of them - Bam! Bam! Bam!" she said. "If I get an eight, I'll win $30,000. Yeah, right!" she thought to herself as she scratched off the ticket.
"Two numbers later it's an eight!" she said.
Before Yarrington started work for the night, she triple-checked her ticket. Then after work she took it to the store to be checked. Yarrington said she and the clerk were excited when the ticket was verified as a $30,000 winner.
"I had to work all night long, waiting to get here," she said.
Yarrington called her husband, Ronald, first to share the news and decide what they wanted to do with the money.
"I had bigger plans and he wanted to be more responsible and pay off the bills," she said.
She also let her coworkers in on her good news.
She told them, "OMG! I just won $30,000!"
The winning ticket was purchased at Casey's, 2601 S.E. Creekview Drive in Ankeny.
