DES MOINES, Iowa - An Iowa City man said a lucky coin may have helped him win the top prize of $30,000 playing the lottery's "Rings of Cash" instant-scratch game.

The store Ronnie Washington usually shops in was out of the Rings of Cash scratch ticket, so he went elsewhere to find it because it's one of his favorites.

"I went to the Tobacco Outlet and bought two of them," he said.

Washington said he has a special way of scratching off his tickets.

"I told the lady in the store that I got to go out and scratch it off with my lucky coin," he said.

Down to his last two numbers to scratch off, Washington was getting excited.

"I couldn't believe it when I picked 34, the last number," he said.

Ronnie Washington claimed his prize June 15 with his family at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

Word spread quickly of Washington's win. He's shared the news with his wife, his mother and his wife's coworkers.

Washington said his winnings will come in handy for some family purchases.

"My son has a trip to Spain next year," he said. "And my wife says she wants a car."

Washington purchased the winning ticket at the Tobacco Outlet Plus, 923 S. Riverside Drive in Iowa City.
