Elizabeth "Beth" Meier Wins Top Prize of $50,000 Playing "Sizzling 7's" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Waterloo woman was feeling lucky last weekend and ended up winning $50,000 playing the lottery's "Sizzling 7's" instant-scratch game.
Beth Meier, 50, purchased the top-prize-winning ticket at the Iowa Lottery tent at The Iowa Speedway, 3333 Rusty Wallace Drive in Newton.
"I said to my husband, 'I'm feeling lucky. Give me some money,'" she said.
After that, Meier had to flag down her husband, Mike, to show him the winning ticket.
"I think you need to come here and look at my ticket," laughed Meier.
Mike didn't quite believe it was a $50,000 winner at first.
"Then after we had the guy check it, he knew it was for real," said Meier.
After stashing the ticket away in the car, they made a few phone calls to friends and relatives.
"They were pretty excited," Meier said.
Meier said her kids had trouble believing her story too.
"All three of them were pretty much in disbelief and I'm like, 'No, I'm really telling you the truth,'" Meier said.
Meier probably will use some of the winnings to travel.
"We might have to take a trip for our 30th wedding anniversary," Meier said.
She also plans to help her twin daughters pay for some college expenses.
Meier claimed her prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. Meier works for the Iowa Department of Transportation in Waterloo.
