Sondra Brecht Wins Top Prize Playing "Magic Line Bingo" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Henry County woman who's employed baking pies won a lot of a different kind of dough recently.
Sondra Brecht, 68, of New London won the top prize of $25,000 playing the lottery's "Magic Line Bingo" instant-scratch game.
She didn't know she'd won the big prize until she took the ticket back to the store to get it verified.
After she purchased the ticket, Brecht said she took it home to scratch it off, and she was sure that she knew how much she'd won.
"I won $500, that's great!" said Brecht.
But then Brecht took the ticket back to the store where her grandson works to verify her win. He checked the ticket for her.
"He turned around and looked at me and said, 'Grandma, you just won $25,000!'"
But Brecht said she didn't believe him.
"No, I did not!" said Brecht. "I won $500. He said, 'No, you have an X there.' That's when everything hit."
Brecht is employed part-time at the Finish Line Restaurant in New London, but she took the day off to claim her prize June 21 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
"I think I have something a little more important than baking pies today," Brecht laughed.
She said she is going to be wise with her winnings.
"I got a couple of things I need to do and make somebody else happy," said Brecht.
She purchased her winning ticket at Jet Stop, 301 W. Main St. in New London.
