Anthony Swim Wins $200,000 in the June 8 Powerball Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Clinton man who purchased a ticket for the June 8 Powerball drawing has just come forward to claim a $200,000 prize, and he and his family plan to use it to help others.
Anthony Swim, 39, claimed the prize July 1 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
Anthony and his wife, Sanae, held onto the winning ticket so they could decide what they wanted to do with the money.
"We didn't want to go hog wild and spend it all," said Anthony.
They knew they wanted to do something that they cared about. Sanae is from Japan and her parents still live there. Fortunately, they were not affected by the radiation as a result of the devastating earthquake there back in March. But Anthony explained that a lot of children who live there are still having difficulties playing outside because of the radiation they may be exposed to.
"They can't go out for the summer," said Anthony.
So, the Swims have decided to help with building a safe place for the kids to play near where Sanae's family lives in Japan.
"We've got a place there that we're setting up (for the kids) to be outside and enjoy the weather," said Anthony. "So we're going to spend some money helping those kids. We're going to go there and set it all up."
Anthony and Sanae are very grateful for Anthony's mom, Dolores. They probably wouldn't have bought the winning ticket without a little help from her.
"My wife was bringing my mom back from chemotherapy and my mom said she felt lucky," said Anthony.
"I said, 'We have to stop. We have to stop. I have a feeling,'" said Dolores. "I'm so excited over the fact that it's going to be used so wonderfully."
The Swims bought the winning ticket at North Bridge Self Service, 119 19th Avenue N. in Clinton.
The family decided to check their tickets at a local gas station in Camanche, and soon everyone in town shared in their big news.
"It was pretty wild, the whole town knew," said Anthony. "Everybody was honking and waving."
The winning numbers in the $25.6 million Powerball jackpot drawing on June 8 were 14-37-44-45-53 and Powerball 29. The Power Play® multiplier was 5. The Swims won a $200,000 prize by matching all five numbers without the Powerball. Had they added the Power Play to their ticket, they would have multiplied their $200,000 win to an instant $1 million prize.
Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot) up to five times. The cost is $1 per play. The Power Play number, 2 through 5, is chosen at the beginning of the drawing indicating the amount prizes (except the jackpot) will be multiplied if that number is drawn.
For players who choose the Power Play and match five white balls (regularly a $200,000 prize), the multiplier will always be 5, so those players would win an instant $1 million.
