Thaddeus Graves Claims Prize from June 28 Mega Millions® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Council Bluffs man won a $40,000 prize in the June 28 Mega Millions drawing because he added the Megaplier® to his ticket.
Thaddeus Graves, 80, claimed his prize June 29 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs.
Graves said he's been playing the lottery since it started in 1985. When he plays Mega Millions, Graves said he always adds the Megaplier.
"If I'm going to win it, I'm going to multiply it," said Graves.
After the Mega Millions drawing, Graves went to check his numbers on his computer.
"When I first looked at it, I couldn't believe it," said Graves. "I had to look at it probably a half a dozen times."
Graves said he's never won that much money in his life and it didn't seem real at first.
"My first thought is 'I must be dreaming,'" said Graves.
Graves has yet to tell anyone about his win.
"I'll probably tell my kids, sooner or later," said Graves. "No hurry."
Graves, who is retired, plans to save some of the money and invest some it.
He purchased his winning ticket at U-Stop, 701 32nd Ave. in Council Bluffs.
Graves said he'll keep on playing Mega Millions.
"It's my favorite game now!" said Graves.
The winning numbers in the $88 million Mega Millions drawing on June 28 were: 12-17-27-47-48 and Mega Ball 33. The Megaplier number that night was 4. Graves' ticket matched the four white balls and the Mega Ball to win a $10,000 prize. Since Graves added the Megaplier option to his ticket, he multiplied his $10,000 win by four and claimed a $40,000 prize.
There was no jackpot winner in the June 28 Mega Millions drawing.
Players can multiply their prizes (except the jackpot) with the Megaplier up to four times. The cost is $1 per play.
