Winterset Woman Had $30,000-Winning Ticket For Almost Two Weeks

Dianna Sickles Wins $30,000 Prize in July 2 Powerball® Drawing

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Winterset woman who purchased a ticket for the July 2 Powerball drawing didn't know she'd won $30,000 until recently.

Dianna Sickles, 64, was carrying around the Powerball ticket for almost two weeks before learning it was worth $30,000.

"I had it in my purse all that time," said Sickles. "Here I have been carrying around $30,000!"

She finally had it checked where she purchased the ticket at the Kum & Go, 122 S. First St. in Winterset.

"The girl's eyes got huge and she said, 'you're a winner!'" said Sickles. "I'm thinking twenty bucks, maybe thirty."

Then Sickles saw how much she had actually won.

"She handed it to me and it was $30,000!" exclaimed Sickles.

The manager of the store had to convince her that it was true, and even the patrons of the store were happy for her.

"Then everybody goes 'yay!'" said Sickles. "They were happy and clapping their hands."

Sickles chose one family member to tell about the good news.

"I called my daughter and she wouldn't believe me," said Sickles, but she added that after hearing everyone in the background, her daughter finally believed she was the winner.

"It was so exciting," said Sickles.

Sickles, who is a retired data entry operator, had a little scare before she came in to collect her winnings. She thought she'd misplaced the winning ticket and went back to the store.

"I can't find my ticket," Sickles told the clerk.

But luckily she found it was in a safe place.

"It was in my billfold all along," she said.

Sickles and her daughter are going to celebrate the win, especially since the win came on her daughter's birthday, July 2.

"I bet we go out to eat," said Sickles. "I bet we have some fun!"

She is still figuring out what she wants to do with the $30,000.

"My mind is still scatterbrained … I'm still in shock that I won it," said Sickles.

The people of Winterset will know about her win.

"My hair kind of lets people know who I am," laughed Sickles.

Even with this win, she doesn't feel that she has been especially lucky.

"Don't know if it's a lucky person, but I am oh, so happy," Sickles said.

She always chooses the Power Play option.

"I've seen someone had won before, big amount of money, and because it was Power Play, they got double," said Sickles. "For a dollar more, that's well worth it," she added.

But she was shocked to learn that she had tripled her money with the Power Play option since the multiplier was 3.

"Was it really!" gasped Sickles. "I have to say 'Praise the Lord.'"

She claimed her prize Thursday at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines.

The winning numbers in the $20 million Powerball jackpot drawing on July 2 were 1-11-18-28-51 and Powerball 32. The Power Play® multiplier was 3. Sickles won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Since she added the Power Play to her ticket, Sickles multiplied her $10,000 win by three to win a $30,000 prize.

There was no jackpot winner in the July 2 drawing.
