Frank Kollasch Wins a Big Prize in Powerball® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Kossuth County man purchased a Powerball ticket for the July 16 drawing and won a $10,000 prize.
Frank Kollasch, 59, of Bancroft was skeptical that he was the $10,000 winner in town.
Kollasch purchased his winning ticket at Bancroft Liquor Store, 107 Portland St. in Bancroft and also had a clerk at that store check the ticket for him. Earlier, the store had received the news that a $10,000-winning ticket had been sold at their store.
"Probably wasn't me," Kollasch recalled telling the clerk. "He stuck the ticket in - he says, 'You're a winner!'" he said.
Even after hearing the clerk say that, Kollasch wasn't thinking he was the big winner.
"Well, it's probably just five bucks," said Kollasch to the clerk who checked his ticket. "He said, 'Nope, you're wrong, it's ten thousand,'" he explained.
News of his big win spread quickly through town.
"Yeah, they were happy for me," said Kollasch. "Out in the yard, people go, 'You're lucky,'" said Kollasch.
Kollasch already has some ideas about how to spend some of his winnings.
"For sure we are gonna get a different TV," said Kollasch. "And the rest of it I might stick in the bank."
Kollasch, who works at Hormel in Algona, claimed his prize Tuesday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Mason City.
The winning numbers in the $62.4 million Powerball jackpot drawing on July 16 were 24-28-48-50-54 and Powerball 25. The Power Play® multiplier was 3. Kollasch won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Had he added the Power Play to his ticket, Kollasch would have multiplied his $10,000 win by three to win a $30,000 prize.
Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot) up to five times. The cost is $1 per play. The Power Play number, 2 through 5, is chosen at the beginning of the drawing indicating the amount prizes (except the jackpot) will be multiplied if that number is drawn.
For players who choose the Power Play and match five white balls (regularly a $200,000 prize), the multiplier will always be 5, so those players would win an instant $1 million.
