Guthrie County Woman Wins $250,000 Lottery Prize

Sara Holmes Claims Prize from July 19 Mega Millions® Drawing

Sara Holmes   Hear Sara tell her story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Guthrie County woman said she'll keep working after winning a $250,000 prize in the July 19 Mega Millions drawing.

Sara Holmes, 50, of Guthrie Center said she plays Mega Millions every so often and wasn't expecting to win big.

"I buy four dollars' worth and thought maybe I could win a little money," she said. "The most I've won is $14 one time."

Holmes had her ticket checked at the store on Wednesday.

"It said 'You're a winner!'" said Holmes.

The clerk tried to let her know how much she had won.

"I thought she said $250. She said 'No, 250,000!'" Holmes said. "My heart is still doing flip-flops!" she exclaimed.

Holmes' mom, Laura Patterson, was the first one she called.

"She said 'Mom, are you sitting down?'" said Patterson. "She said, 'Well, I won some money!' I couldn't believe it either."

Holmes has already told folks at work about winning the big Mega Millions prize. She works as a certified nursing assistant at a nursing home.

"My D.O.N. (Director of Nursing) says 'You're not going to quit, are you?'" laughed Holmes. "I am going to keep working."

Holmes plans on putting the money away for retirement and said she is going to do a little remodeling to her house.

Holmes claimed her prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. She purchased her winning ticket at Casey's, 100 N. Fifth St. in Guthrie Center.

The winning numbers in the $43 million Mega Millions drawing on July 19 were: 2-9-10-16-35 and Mega Ball 40. The Megaplier® number that night was 4. Holmes' ticket matched all five white balls without the Mega Ball to win a $250,000 prize. Had Holmes added the Megaplier option to her ticket, she would have won an instant $1 million prize.

There was no jackpot winner in the July 19 Mega Millions drawing.

Players can multiply their prizes (except the jackpot) with the Megaplier up to four times. The cost is $1 per play.
