Corning Man Contributes $50,000 Win To Being In The Right Place At The Right Time

Jerry Gilbert Wins Top Prize of $50,000 Playing "Super Crossword" Scratch Game

Jerry Gilbert   Hear Jerry tell his story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Corning man said had he not been on a trip for work he may have never purchased his top prize-winning "Super Crossword" ticket.

Jerry Gilbert, 56, said there were many strange things that happened that led to his win, including his purchase of the last three tickets on the roll.

"I asked the clerk for two five dollar tickets and he gave me three," Gilbert said. "I said, 'Oh, what the heck, I'll just take all three of them.'"

Gilbert was with a friend delivering scrap metal for work when they stopped at Eddy's, 1200 S. Locust St. in Glenwood where he purchased his ticket.

"Had we not been going that direction I never would've stopped there. Also, they usually put the roll in backwards but I ended up with ticket number one and it was the winner!" Gilbert said.

Gilbert said he scratched the winning ticket when he and his friend got back on the road and was shocked to discover he'd won the top prize of $50,000.

"It got up to eight words and it was a $500 winner and we were really excited," he said. "I got to the third to the last letter and realized it was a $50,000 winner. It didn't even dawn on me!"

Gilbert said he and his friend stopped to have the ticket validated and that's when he decided to celebrate.

"My friend just went crazy," Gilbert said.

Gilbert plans to use some of his winnings to pay bills as well as share with his family. He claimed his prize Thursday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs.
