Carroll Man Wins $15,000 Lottery Prize

Roger Onken Wins Top Prize Playing "Pink Panther™" Scratch Game

Roger and Carol Onken   Hear Roger tell his story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Carroll man was on a trip with his wife when he discovered he'd won the top prize of $15,000 playing the Iowa Lottery's "Pink Panther™" instant-scratch game.

Roger Onken, 51, said he and his wife, Carol, never play the same lottery tickets because they believe it's bad luck. So when they stopped at a gas station and Carol bought a few lottery tickets, Onken chose two different ones, including Pink Panther.

"We had planned to stop in this little town; she headed to the bathroom and I scratched the ticket off," Onken said. "I scratched the 'P' off and it said 'win.'"

Onken said he was expecting a prize of a few dollars, but when he scratched the rest of the ticket off he realized he'd won $15,000.

"I thought, 'I better not go nuts here.' So I turned it over and waited for her to come out of the bathroom," Onken said. "I couldn't hardly believe it. It was shock more than self-control."

Onken said when he showed Carol the ticket, her mouth dropped open in disbelief.

"She said, 'You've got to be kidding me,'" he said.

He said they were originally going to save the ticket to cash after their trip to Missouri, but they knew the lottery's headquarters was in Des Moines, so they stopped to claim their prize on July 21.

Onken, who is a machinist, said they were planning to surprise his son with the news when they saw him on their trip.

Onken said he plans to use some of his winnings to purchase a newer vehicle. He purchased his winning ticket at Carroll Country Store, 1511 N. Hwy. 71 in Carroll.
