William Pearson   Hear William tell his story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Cedar Rapids man said he was expecting to win a $3,000 prize on his "Crossword" instant-scratch ticket, but ended up with much more.

William Pearson, 52, said after counting the words on his ticket several times, he had confused himself so much that he just decided to have his ticket validated at his local retailer.

"I thought I won three thousand. I was so confused I had to go down and run it through quick and it ended up being thirty!" Pearson said.

Pearson said his wife, Lissa, was with him when he scratched his ticket and she was even more excited than he was about it.

"I just don't think it has sunk in with me yet," he said.

Pearson, who is a plumber for Modern Piping in Cedar Rapids, said he had also told his mother and his children about his win and they were all very excited for him.

"It got on Facebook somehow and now everyone knows," Pearson said with a laugh.

Pearson said he really enjoys the Crossword ticket and has been playing it off and on for about five years.

"It's entertaining whether you win or not," he said.

Pearson said he plans to use some of his winnings to buy new appliances for his home.
