Cindy Veldhuizen Claims Prize from Aug. 2 Mega Millions® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Fairfield woman had no idea she was the $10,000 Mega Millions prize winner her local convenience store was looking for until she returned from a vacation.
Cindy Veldhuizen said she always purchases her Mega Millions tickets at Jet Stop, 120 E. Burlington Ave. in Farfield, since she knows the manager at the store.
"The next week when I got back I was just checking my tickets and I'm like, 'Laura, you need to look at this!'" Veldhuizen said.
Veldhuizen, 43, said she couldn't believe she had won such a big prize, and neither could the store manager.
"I started screaming and jumping up and down and she said, 'What? We just had another winner…'" Veldhuizen said. "She said, 'You ding dong; we were looking for you!'"
After celebrating with the store manager, Veldhuizen called her husband. She said at first he didn't believe her, until the store manager vouched for her.
"The only other time I ever won was $30, so this is great!" she said.
Veldhuizen said she also told her supervisor at work, where she drives a transit bus. She said everyone has been happy with her, but a little jealous too.
Veldhuizen claimed her prize Aug. 23 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. She said she plans to put her winnings into savings.
The winning numbers in the $85 million Mega Millions drawing on Aug. 2 were: 14-17-19-20-32 and Mega Ball 28. The Megaplier® number that night was 4. Veldhuizen's ticket matched the four white balls and the Mega Ball to win a $10,000 prize. Had she added the Megaplier option to her ticket, Veldhuizen would have multiplied her $10,000 win by four to claim a $40,000 prize.
There was no jackpot winner in the Aug. 2 Mega Millions drawing.
Players can multiply their prizes (except the jackpot) with the Megaplier up to four times. The cost is $1 per play.
