Brian Brenner Wins $10,000 Prize in Wednesday's Powerball Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - An Eldridge man said out of all the regular Powerball numbers he usually plays, it was his easy pick ticket that won him a $10,000 prize in Wednesday's drawing.
Brian Brenner, 42, said he usually plays a few sets of birthday and anniversary numbers on his Powerball tickets and gets one easy pick just for fun.
"It just happened to be an easy pick that won it," Brenner said.
Brenner said he was home with his wife when he decided to check his numbers on the Iowa Lottery's website.
"My wife was in the kitchen and I kind of looked up at her and I said, 'I, uh, think I just won,'" Brenner said. "At first I thought I had won $150 and then I looked a little further and realized it was $10,000."
Brenner said his wife didn't believe him at first, but was very excited when he showed her the numbers.
Brenner, who is a machinist at Rock Island Arsenal, said he went to work Monday morning, but told his boss he'd be handing in a leave slip.
"I said, 'Don't even doubt my commitment to my job. I just won the lottery and I'm here!'" Brenner said with a laugh.
Brenner claimed his prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. He purchased his winning ticket at Eldridge Amoco, 450 E. Le Claire Road in Eldridge.
He said he plans to use some of his winnings to pay bills as well as do some home repairs.
The winning numbers in the $47.9 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Wednesday were: 9-13-47-49-53 and Powerball 39. The Power Play® multiplier was 5. Brenner won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Had he added the Power Play to his ticket, Brenner would have multiplied his $10,000 win by five to win a $50,000 prize.
There was no jackpot winner in Wednesday's drawing.
Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot) up to five times. The cost is $1 per play. The Power Play number, 2 through 5, is chosen at the beginning of the drawing indicating the amount prizes (except the jackpot) will be multiplied if that number is drawn.
For players who choose the Power Play and match five white balls (regularly a $200,000 prize), the multiplier will always be 5, so those players would win an instant $1 million.
