Kimberly Furness Wins Top Prize Playing "Diamond Mine" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Davenport woman said after a run of bad luck, she feels blessed to have won a top prize of $30,000 playing the lottery's "Diamond Mine" instant-scratch game.
Kimberly Furness, 40, said after some recent bad luck, she was beginning to feel unsure of her future; but now that she's won a big prize she can sleep a little easier at night.
"I scratched it off and won $30,000!" Furness said. "I literally fell to my knees crying. It just felt like an instant answer. It was pretty great."
Furness said she was very anxious to tell someone about her win, but she had scratched the ticket at 5 a.m. so she wasn't sure who to call.
"I called my sister and she didn't answer of course," she said. "She finally picked up and said, 'What?' So I told her I won and she didn't believe me."
Furness, who is an actress/producer/director in Davenport, said the Diamond Mine ticket is one of her favorites and she buys about one a week to entertain herself, but she never dreamed she'd win the top prize.
"You can't win if you don't play!" she said. "It wasn't a life changing thing, but it's what I need right now."
Furness said she plans to use some of her winnings to pay bills as well as take a trip somewhere.
Kimberly Furness claimed her prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. The winning ticket was purchased at Kwik Shop, 201 W. 53rd St. in Davenport.
