Dubuque Man Almost Misses $30,000 Lottery Win

Michael LuGrain Wins Top Prize of $30,000 Playing "Twisted" Scratch Game

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Dubuque man said he almost didn't realize he'd won a $30,000 prize playing the lottery's "Twisted" instant-scratch game, so he's glad he had the ticket validated.

Michael LuGrain said even though he scratched his Twisted ticket in the parking lot of Road Ranger, 2175 Central Ave. in Dubuque where he purchased it, he drove all the way home not realizing what he'd won.

"After I looked over it about 30 times it kind of kicked in and I was like, 'Oh my gosh, I really did win it!'" he said.

LuGrain had his ticket validated at a different retailer, because he knows the people who work there.

"I took it over to where my mom's boyfriend works," LuGrain said. "That kind of drew a crowd because they made a big deal about it."

LuGrain said after the ticket was validated he called his mom.

"She just thought I was trying to pull one over on her," he said.

LuGrain claimed his prize Oct. 3 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. LuGrain is an independent contractor for a newspaper in Dubuque.

He said he plans to use some of his winnings to pay bills, as well as purchase a newer vehicle better suited for Iowa winters.
